Regrowing store bought vegetables and fruits - Part 2: Tomatoes
regrowing vegetables from seeds (tomatoes)
I never knew that store-bought vegetables are so easy to regrow. It’s sustainable, it’s cheap, and
it's convenient. Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing some tips on how to regrow store-bought
vegetables and fruits.
Let's talk about regrowing store-bought vegetables from seeds this time.
Tomatoes, paprika, pepper, zucchini, egg plant, avocado, strawberry, blueberry, apple, pumpkin,
beans and lots of other fruits and vegetables can be regrown using the seeds from your store-bought
goods.
Not all are easy to grow. For me tomatoes have worked out great so let's start with those. I used
small snack tomatoes, but you can use any type of tomato you prefer.
How to grow tomatoes from seeds (using store-bought tomatoes)?
- Cut the tomato in half and carefully take out the seeds.
- Clean seeds with water and let dry on a paper towel.
- Get your small plant growing pots ready. Preferable pots that dissolve in the ground over time.
You can for example, make pots from empty toilet rolls, old newspapers, egg shells.
- Place pots on a plate and dirt and one seed to every pot.
- Cover with plastic wrap or a translucent dish cloth.
- Water plants every day by pouring water onto the plate. Also take off cover to provide fresh air
daily.
- When the first seeds begin to sprout you can take the cover off.
- When the first leaves show the plant it’s ready to be transplanted to a bigger pot or in the
ground (when using a pot, make sure the pot has drainage holes).
- Make sure the plants get plenty of sun and water.
- Tall plants might need some support. Tying up the tomatoes, by using a bamboo stick or rope,
will protect the plant from hard winds and tough weather.
- Remove suckers that grow between two branches (crotch joint of two branches). This way the plant
can use all its energy to grow delicous tomatoes.
- After about ten weeks, you should be able to harvest the first tomatoes.
